Technical preconditions
In order to be able to use the DFG Viewer for presenting your digital representations you only have to make at least three components accessible via simple web access:
- the describing metadata in the METS/MODS or METS/TEI format,
- the digital representations with a width of 1,000 to 1,500 pixels and
- an image file, which is exactly 108 pixels wide and 50 pixels high, and displays the logo and/ or the name of your library.
- Optionally you can provide a logo of your sponsor with the same dimensions.
Further recommendations
In order to ensure the highest possible degree of transparency regarding the authors in spite of the centralised display of digital representations from various repositories, the inclusion of a footer or of another suitable identification of the image files is recommended. You will also find links to examples regarding this in the menu. In addition to the image resolution mentioned above, you can also provide further versions as an option. In addition to the (usually even higher) original resolution of the digital representation, the metadata format also provides for a smaller version with a width of approximately 600 pixels and a preview with a maximum dimension of 150 pixels as well as for a download version in the PDF format. The DFG Viewer uses only the image with the highest resolution as well as the preview and download variants. The DFG Viewer supports the standardised OAI protocol for the targeted retrieval of metadata from a repository. To that end, the interface of your metadata archive has to support the OAI verb GetRecord and the metadata prefix mets. The use of such an interface is recommended since a large number of further services can also be supplied with metadata by means of this. You can also find links to notes regarding the implementation in the menu. In addition to this, the DFG Viewer offers a number of functions, the use of which is optional, however. For example, you can offer various zoom stages and download versions of your digital representations, equip these with persistent identifiers for the precise page and have structural data displayed as a table of content and navigation aid. To that end, your metadata, of course, has to be supplemented with the additional information or the further versions of the digital representations also have to be accessible via web access. The possible file formats, a documentation of the metadata format used and of the further possibilities, information on the technical implementation of the interfaces as well as practical examples are provided under the corresponding menu items on the right side.
